Forming the Scot's Guards

A place to discuss all things related to the Scots Guards

Forming the Scot's Guards

Hey Gents,
I believe we now have at least 2 members that would like to do Scot's Guards. My brother is having " a go" this coming April, and if he likes it we will be up to about 3 Scot's Guards. Some things we need to look at...

-Which Scot's Guards do we want to do? It would probably be best to all portray the same.

- What do we need to add to our impression? I know we need to put the Scot's Guards dice on our helmets. The closest to an original I could find was an early WW2 helmet that was for sale overseas. I am still trying to find out if there was a huge difference between the dice. How about having the proper shoulder patches. I have seen everyone selling the ww2 ones, but no one seems to have the proper red backing with white stitching. I am currently working with an embroiderer to see if they could reproduce them for me.

- Anything else that we should look into to complete our kit? I am currently working on trying to be in contact with someone from the Guards Museum to talk "shop" about the Scot's Guards!

Just wanted to start getting some talk up. In all honesty the event is about 3 months away....and just not trying to be a FARB this time around!

That is a great goal Neil!

I think Chris Gomes, so far the only guy to make it out as Scots Guards. He has decided to do 1st Bn I believe. John Adams has also expressed an interest to do the "Jocks".

From what I can tell, there are a few things you can do. First, I don't know if anyone has verified that the Scots Guards had dice on their helmets during WWI. Not that they didn't, but I wouldn't take it as a given. Second, if you can find a place that will make the shoulder titles, that would be fantastic, since that style title for all regiments seem to be drying up. If you find a Grenadier/Coldstream Guards title and a blue/yellow Scots Guards title, just have them match the Scots Guards writing and the Grenadier/Coldstream Guards red. If you do find a place, let me know. I would like to buy a set. I think I am going to make my spare loaner kits different regiments, to keep the variety.

You will also need a capbadge for your service dress. I believe there is evidence as well that they trench/SD Caps had either dice or the Stuart Tartan in small squares by each chin strap button. I will look into that again and see what I can find for you.

Finally, you may want to try and contact the Regimental Adjutant and Historians directly. The Guards Museum is run by volunteers and are primarily Veterans who do it for their love of the Guards. As such, they don't have as much access to those details as do the Regiments themselves. I don't have their direct contact, but I believe Scots Guards Regimental HQ is still at Wellington Barracks, Birdcage Walk London.

Feel free to give me a call sometime and I can pass on whatever research we have so far.

Thanks for the effort man.
