Gor Blimey

Gor Blimey

Postby SirJames on Wed Feb 06, 2008 3:15 am

Hey Fellas,
Our member Dan Comes has been talking about using his talent of making Civil War headgear to try and make Gor Blimey's for WWI. He is wondering if there is any interest out there, before he takes on this endeavor. I think they would be popular and people would be interested in them.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Jim

Dan, feel free to add if I have missed anything.

Gor Blimey Caps

Postby Dcomes1 on Wed Feb 06, 2008 2:37 pm

Hello everyone-
I do plan on trying to repro these if there is an interest with the most authentic materials to the originals that I can locate. These caps will feature a grey wool lining with a spiral quilting on the crown, the neck capes will be quilted in the rear and have the same wide wool retaining loops which will tuck on the top of the cap and fold under the neck. The materials are a bit pricey (lining by itself looks to be $20-25 a yard) so the finished price would be something like $70. Shoot me an email at TheEvilPanda37@aol.com if theres an interest or you have any questions. Cheers!

I will take one, I wear a 7 3/8. Any one else? I think they look cool and probably are a good investment for cold Newville nights.

If we get enough interest in the hats, maybe we could put in a group order for the insignia from one of the vendors.

Update

Postby Dcomes1 on Mon Mar 03, 2008 2:47 pm

Just wanted to let you guys know whats going on with the project. I found a 1951 pattern overcoat this weekend for the material, which is pretty close to the repro khaki on my WPG tunic (allbeit a shade darker and toward the green side, but nothing too wacky and a good thick weave) Ive made up one cap nearly completely, and ill be working on the earflap/neck cape tonight (ill post some pictures when i complete the first) This first cap will be a larger size so we'll see who has put orders in with a large head that would match this one the best. When its finished i hope to have decent quilting across the back of the cape/flap and a spiral of concentric circle of quilting inside the liner, which is darker grey flannel. All in all im pretty thrilled at how this is sewing up, even if at this point it does still just look like a trenchcap. Ill keep you guys updated on how it comes along

Cap pictures

Postby Dcomes1 on Tue Mar 04, 2008 4:46 pm

Guys-
The first cap is 98 percent complete. Ill get back to you with what size it turns out to be, but I think its coming out well. Considerably more work than I expected had to be done though, so the finished price will be $70 plus shipping, instead of my quoted $65. With the materials purchased and the time to make one of these bad boys, your still making out like a bandit over some of the other repros (Pegasus Militaria in UK has one for 50 Pounds plus shipping!) Heres some pictures, enjoy! Image

Wow, sounds like a great hat Jim. Glad I placed my order early. Dan, you think they will all be ready by the event in April? Let me know if you need payment ahead of the event and I can mail you out a check or paypal you.

I will have a couple available for the orders placed so far, im 95 percent sure I can have them all done and delivered at the event. You can just pay me as you recieve the caps instead of ahead of time because with schoolwork so sporradic right now I dont want to accept a payment and fall behind in the orders. If possible, and I get them done early I could mail them out so we could see if alterations need to be made for fit, but ill keep you guys posted on how far I get with each batch!
