Usage by Guards

Postby bograt1918 on Thu Oct 30, 2008 6:35 pm

How prevalent would the use of Gor-Blimey's be in the Guards? I have one and I like to sit around in it around the campfire or just socializing, but I always wear my stiff SD cap to formations. Is there any photo documentation of Guards in Gor-Blimey's in formation? Just wondering...and yes...they are darn comfortable. :D

Mr Adams,

the Guards being the Guards,

I'd bet you a shilling to a beer that they never wore them to formation.
Can't prove it but just knowing the Guards are the Guards,
Spit and polish and all that good stuff...
it never would have happened!!!

PS The hats do look good though

Knowing the Guards, Steve is probably right! Gor Blimey were certainly used as well though. I don't have it scanned, but Stephen Bull's book the British Army in WWI has a squad style photo of about 40 Guards all wearing Gor Blimeys. Here are some photos I got from the Imperial War Museum when I was in London of the 2nd Bn Grenadier Guards. As you can see, there are both styles used. Sorry about the quality, but all I could get were photocopies. I especially like the Grenadiers getting water, all in Gor Blimeys:

This photo has both the SD and the Gor Blimey (in the back the guy with the pipe and the guy next to him):

Then again, Pickelhaubes and Bandages were also styled in the guards!

Enjoy!

Look...Walsh must be the Corporal in charge of this squad - He has them all digging! 'oo-Rah!
