Canteen Question

Canteen Question

Postby Benjamin McGee on Sun Jan 18, 2009 4:40 am

Ok, I found a surplus outfit, www.bayonetinc.com that has ww2 canteens for $8.95. Is it worth it to spraypaint one of these blue and save some dough?

Hey Ben,
That is certainly an option! Beware what sort of paint you use. I tried once and wound up with blue lips everytime I used the thing. Another option is to find a WWII RAF water bottle which is blue and replacing the cover with brown wool from another water bottle or some other grey/brown wool.

For another random tidbit of information, in the Brit Army you drink from a water bottle and go to buy a drink at a canteen. As Americans we ALL have the habit to call a water bottle a canteen - We always make that mistake and someone always will rib you for it! It is all in good fun, and is kind of a running joke!

Cheers!

If you get the RAF "water bottle" I have a spare brown/green cover I can give you.

Thanks for the offer. Anyone know a source for the RAF water bottle?

They turn up all over the place.

Here is one I found:

https://www.armynavysales.com/p-236-wwl ... nteen.aspx

Other places that have them now and again include:

CastleKeep www.reenact.com
Cheaper than Dirt www.cheaperthandirt.com
Sportsmans Guide www.sportsmansguide.com
International Military Antiques www.ima-usa.com

It is really hit or miss, but it is another option just like your paint idea. Both will work great.

Cheers!
