I found this small piece in our local newspaper, the Surrey Mirror, which covers the area of Caterham Barracks where many Guards have been stationed and this was under the yesteryear section along with an article on the Great Gold Train Robbery of 1855:
'May 15th 1888: An amourous soldier: Steven Melluish, a private in the Grenadier Guards, stationed at Caterham, was charged at the Croydon County Bench on Monday, before Sir Thomas Edridge, with assaulting Mary Ann Stone, at Coulsdon, on Sunday night.
It appeared that the prosecutrix was going home with her friend, Miss Hoare, when the prisoner rushed after her and put his arms around her neck.
She screamed and her Uncle, Mr. Lippard, ran up and held the prisoner until a constable arrived.
He was remanded until Saturday.'
I wonder what the outcome was?
